We Were There, Now Were Here: New Art by Young Artists with Autism and Learning Disabilities

Feb 1-Mar 13. Described by Rt. Hon. David Cameron M.P. as a treasure trove of creativity and personal expression, this enchanting new exhibition is full of magic, hope and inspiration. Blackbirds leading the lost out of mythic forests; men metamorphosing into serpents; bees performing opera; bicycles made of straw: the extraordinarily rich, fluid and inventive visionary landscape informing this collection of art by young artists with learning disabilities and autistic spectrum condition marks a new departure in contemporary art. A two-site exhibition marks the culmination of their courageous creative journey from a small classroom doubling as a studio to the galleries of Oxford University and Oxford Town Hall. A new accompanying book, available from the St. Annes, Blackwells, and from Flash of Splendour directly, examines the themes and imagery shaping the paintings and explains why we urgently need to change the way we think about and educate young disabled people.
